Cool stuff as always love the shapes used thanks alot btw on the comment you gave me with those book references and artist names to look at. I did appreciate it just didn't comment so I can keep the message in my inbox ^^
But one thing I will say, I did use texture brushes on this. But it was more for just experimenting. I prefer to just paint the stuff by hand. NOW, brick textures and ground texture....if time is not on your side, or you just don't want to personally spend hours up hours hand painting it....then use textures to help you.
There really is only one way to get good at painting those kind of textures (this does not include texture brushes). You just have to keep painting, and be willing to put in the hours. Just paint a lot of environments, and use plenty of photograhpic reference to help you understand what certain textures looks like, and paint it to the best of your ability. Or you can just use texture brushes for everything, but I personally don't care for doing that, as it becomes a crutch if you keep using them.
